    This paper describes the Hilsa shad fishery in the upper Bay of Bengal (Orissa and West Bengal in India; Bangladesh and Burma). It reviews current knowledge on the biology and fishery of Hilsa ilisha, sets out the findings of field observations in these areas, and makes recommendations on future work needed to understand better the nature of the stocks exploited in India and Bangladesh. The study on which this paper is based was initiated in September 1983 and continued in intermittent spells till March 1984. The paper and the study are activities of the project “Marine Fishery Resources Management in the Bay of Bengal”: RAS/81/051, which is funded by the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), and executed by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) under its Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP). The project has a duration of four years; it commenced in January 1983. Its immediate objective is to improve the practice of fishery resources assessment amo ng participating countries and to stimulate and assist in joint assessment and management activities between countries sharing fish stocks.
