DocumentDrafting the technical paper on Applications of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) for Food Safety Management 2016
Also available in:
No results found. The expert workshop on practical applications of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) for food safety management was held to develop a paper with concrete case studies on the use of WGS for food safety management in the regulatory frameworks at the national level. The experts presented different case studies, practical applications and lessons learnt from implementing WGS for food safety management. WGS could be an effective tool that allows the identification and characterization of microorganisms wit h a high level of precision not previously possible. The experts stated that WGS could be a cost-efficient alternative for countries with existing subtyping capabilities or countries that have existing infrastructure and want to implement WGS. Through the case studies presented by the experts, along with various benefits and potential drawbacks, it was recognized that there are several regulatory and technical challenges associated with the actual implementation of WGS in food safety managemen t. Interpretation of data and validation, comfort level among partners on appropriate use of data, intellectual property, and isolate ownership can be drawbacks related to implementation of the technology. Another challenge that needs to be addressed, especially in developing countries is the confidence in the use of databases and fear of trade barriers. At the end of the workshop, the first draft of the technical background paper was successfully developed. All key elements identified on the f irst day were incorporated into the paper and some suggestions were made for FAO and WHO for the next steps. -
DocumentTechnical meeting on the Impact of Whole Genome Sequencing on food safety management: Poster abstracts
23 - 25 May 2016

No results found. On the occasion of the Technical Meeting on the impact of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) on food safety management and the 9th meeting of the Global Microbial Identifier from 23 - 25 May 2016 in Rome, Italy, a poster session is held as an opportunity for experts to share and discuss their projects on the topic of WGS and food safety. The abstracts of all presented posters are compiled in this document. The topics of the posters range from research projects on WGS of specific microorganisms, devel oping national strategy to bring pathogen genomics into practice, different platforms for detection and analysis of foodborne outbreaks, to use of WGS in a factory environment. The poster session serves as a good platform for the participants of the Technical Meeting for further discussion and exchange of ideas on the topic of WGS for food safety. -

No results found. The 9th meeting of Global Microbial Identifier (GMI), which was preceded by a Technical Meeting on the impact of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) for food safety management: within a One Health framework, was held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Rome, Italy on 23- 25 May 2016. The Meeting was attended by 175 participants from 50 countries including 26 developing countries, highlighting the significant level of interest in the topic by many e xperts and government officials. WGS is a technology relevant to different sectors such as health, agriculture, food safety and medicine. Mulitsectoral collaboration, particularly in relation to sharing of data generated by this technology the technology is critical to optimizing its use. Key messages from the Technical Meeting are reported including the benefits and potential drawbacks of WGS, considerations for developing countries, issues around global data-sharing and key needs for global ac tions and potential roles of international organizations like FAO.
