Synopsis (short abstract) The agricultural sector in Lebanon and particularly the milk and dairy segment represents one of the major sources of income for rural poor farming communities in Lebanon. FAO, in collaboration with the Government of Lebanon’s Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and thanks to funding from the Lebanese Recovery Fund (LRF), executed two projects, over a period of four years, to kick-start sustainable milk production and improvement of the food safety standards of the dairy industry in Lebanon. Major emphasis was put on improving the quality and hygienic standards of milk and dairy products to safeguard the Lebanese consumer and to improve the milk prices.

    Guide to good dairy farming practice 2004 2004

    This guide has been developed by an IDF/FAO Task Force on Good Dairy Farming Practices in a user-friendly format for dairy farmers. When adopted it will support the marketing of safe, quality-assured milk and dairy products, and focus on the relationship between consumer safety and best practice at farm level. The guidelines on individual practices have been drawn from existing schemes around the world but are not intended to be legally binding. They aim to provide a genuine framework for farm a ssurance schemes to be developed worldwide and give the opportunity for individual countries to develop schemes that are specific to their social, environmental, welfare and economic needs.

    The report has reviewed the operational and managerial aspects of the project thoroughly. In addition, it has highlighted the relevance, efficiency, effectiveness of the project on the whole value chain of the dairy sector in Lebanon. Overall, this report was comprehensive on evaluating the impacts and sustainability, as perceived by the FAO Representation, the Ministry of Agriculture and the beneficiaries, keeping in mind that it cannot be comprehensively assessed at present.
