ProjectAdvancing Agricultural Statistical Capacity Development across African Countries - MTF/GLO/431/BMG 2025
Also available in:
The Global Strategy for Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS) was developed in 2009 as a blueprint for a coordinated and long-term initiative to address the decline in the agricultural statistical systems of a number of developing countries. Phase II of the Global Strategy, which is the focus of the project, aimed to address the growing demand for robust agricultural and rural data by enhancing the capacity of national statistical systems. At its core, the project sought to provide African countries with the technical and organizational skills needed to produce and better present agricultural statistics essential for evidence-based policymaking, monitoring and planning. This effort was particularly critical given the challenges faced by low and middle-income countries, where resources and trained personnel are often insufficient to support data-driven agricultural and food security initiatives. GSARS II also played a crucial role in fostering South-South Cooperation and accelerating the implementation of the 50x2030 Initiative, contributing to long-term impact and sustainability. -
ProjectEmpowering Agroecology: Engaging Stakeholders, Sharing Knowledge, and Building Capacities for Sustainable Food Systems - MTF/GLO/664/MKF 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Agroecology is recognized as a crucial approach for advancing sustainable food systems, with significant global growth in research, practices and policies over the past decade. Since 2014, FAO has organized global and regional meetings aimed at fostering a multistakeholder dialogue on agroecology to identify both opportunities and barriers for scaling up this approach. The project specifically focused on addressing critical gaps related to the co-creation and sharing of agroecological knowledge and evidence. Specifically, the intervention aimed to achieve three primary objectives: enhancing accessibility to agroecological knowledge, fostering a platform for information sharing, and establishing strategic connections to facilitate collective action in advancing agroecological transitions. -
ProjectTransforming Agricultural Oversight in Timor-Leste: Surveys, Rapid Data Response and Campaign Innovations - UTF/TIM/009/TIM 2024
Also available in:
No results found. The MAF of Timor-Leste launched a transformative initiative to enhance agricultural productivity and planning through the Sustainable Agriculture Productivity Improvement Project (SAPIP). Supported by a USD 21 million grant from the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP), the project aimed to improve smallholder farmers' productivity. Despite significant progress achieved since Timor-Leste's independence, the country continued to face significant human resource capacity constraints and a recognized need for a decentralized approach across all government institutions, including the MAF. The latter, in particular, requires accurate information on its activities and evidence-based analysis of its performance and the outcomes of the programmes it oversees. To address these challenges, the Government of Timor-Leste sought assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to develop an evidence-based Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) System as a sub-component of the SAPIP. The system integrated planning, monitoring and reporting, using data-driven tools for decision-making. The project concluded successfully in December 2023, establishing sustainable, evidence-based agricultural management.
