This is the seventeenth issue in the FAO series of world-wide annotated and illustrated catalogues of the groups of marine organisms that enter marine fisheries. This volume covers all four species currently recognized in the family Glaucosomatidae (pearl perches). It includes a glossary of technical terms, general remarks on the family, an illustrated key to species, detailed accounts of species, and a table of species by major fishing areas. Species accounts include illustrations, scientific a nd vernacular names, references to scientific names, information on habitat, biology and fisheries, and a distribution map. The work is fully indexed and a reference to pertinent literature is appended.

Sea urchin farming in the Mediterranean Sea
The case study of Paracentrotus lividus
    2025

The sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus plays a crucial role in shallow marine ecosystems and is an important model organism for scientific research. It is also considered a Mediterranean delicacy, appreciated for the rich flavour and delicate texture of its gonads, commonly referred to as roe. However, due to changing conditions in the species' natural habitat driven by market demand and rapid environmental shifts, Paracentrotus lividus populations in the Mediterranean have been thrown out of balance in recent decades. The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations recognizes the importance of this species and is prioritizing sustainable aquaculture practices for the management of its populations. This manual outlines echinoculture plant structures, techniques and management practices for the production of Paracentrotus lividus and the restoration of healthy natural stocks. From taxonomy to feeding optimization, it presents a practical tool to embark on sea urchin aquaculture ventures.

Handbook on alien decapod crustaceans and new fishes of the Adriatic Sea 2023
    Also available in:
    No results found.

This document reviews and compiles the scientific information available on the new and non-indigenous fish and decapod crustacean species in the Adriatic Sea, central Mediterranean Sea. For fish, the new species are those whose presence in the Adriatic Sea was recorded recently, since the year 2000. For decapod crustaceans, only alien species found in the Adriatic Sea after the Second World War are dealt with. In total, 15 crustaceans and 52 fish species were selected and presented in this handbook. Following an introductory section, giving a general overview on the Adriatic Sea geographical characteristics, this document reviews, in its first part, the ichthyofauna and decapod crustaceans in the area. The second part of the document provides a description of each new species including synonyms, meristic formula, main morphologic features, bio-ecology, known geographical distribution, relevance and reference literature. This work was designed and implemented within the framework of the FAO-AdriaMed Project “Scientific Cooperation to Support Responsible Fisheries in the Adriatic Sea”.
