ProjectProgramme / project reportAssessment of agricultural drought severity in Afghanistan for 2022 2023
Also available in:
No results found.Assessing agricultural drought severity is critical for food security. Remote sensing data, particularly the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) from MODIS product1, helps evaluate drought extent. Monthly VCI maps from January to April are merged to create a comprehensive growing season map, categorized into five drought severity classes. This map is then visualized using a hexagon grid with cells of approximately 350 square kilometers. The 2022 drought severity assessment reveals that numerous provinces in Afghanistan experienced higher levels of drought, especially in the extreme and severe classes. These findings are important for the Afghanistan Emergency Food Security Project (OSRO/AFG/213/WBK), providing essential information to address food security challenges and implement appropriate interventions. -

No results found.Monitoring and assessing agricultural drought is crucial for ensuring food security in Afghanistan. This assessment utilizes remote sensing data and analysis to evaluate drought extent using the vegetation health index1 which combines the vegetation and temperature condition indices retrieved from MODIS products2,3. Monthly vegetation health index maps from December to April are processed and merged to create a comprehensive growing season map, categorized into five drought severity classes for drought impact assessment4. For a better visual representation, the map is visualized by means of a hexagon grid with cells of 350 square kilometers. As can be seen, comparing the drought area percentages in 2018 and 2022, many provinces exhibited higher levels of drought (extreme + severe) in 2018 than in 2022. These findings hold significant relevance for the Afghanistan Emergency Food Security Project, aiding essential information to address food security challenges and implement appropriate interventions.

Book (stand-alone)Technical bookThe Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Agro-Ecological Zoning Atlas
Part 1: Agro-climatic indicators
2019Also available in:
No results found.Agriculture is crucial for the national economy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Adoption of new strategies for agriculture monitoring, rural land use planning, and management are urgently required to reduce hunger and poverty and to assure sustainable food and feed production for future generations. The availability of reliable information on natural resources and agriculture for its monitoring and analysis is indispensable to the development and implementation of such strategies. For this purpose the project “Strengthening Afghanistan Institutions’ Capacity for the Assessment of Agriculture Production and Scenario Development” (GCP/AFG/087/EC), funded by the European Union (EU), is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Within the context of this project, FAO and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) are developing a National Agro-Ecological Zoning activity (NAEZ) in Afghanistan. This Atlas is the first of two books and provides the collected information and maps of the country based on the agro-climatic Indicators.
