Synopsis (short abstract) Fishery Performance Indicators (FPIs) were developed to address gaps in data and information on fisheries worldwide and in recognition that to be successful with fisheries investment, development or conservation projects measurable outcomes are needed. The focus of the tool and its indicators is to evaluate the effectiveness of management systems in aligning ecosystem health and human well-being. The Ocean Partnership Program (OPP) belonging to the Areas Beyond National Jurisdictions (ABNJ) program funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and the World Bank, supported the Caribbean Billfish Project and its development of billfish fisheries management and conservation business cases in the Caribbean. The Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC), Conservation International and the fisheries authorities in the Dominican Republic and Grenada teamed-up to develop business cases at national level. The FPIs studies in both countries were conducted on the commercial and recreational pelagic fisheries. For Grenada, the commercial pelagic longline fishery, the commercial fish aggregating device (FAD) fishery and recreational fishery for billfish and other pelagics were assessed. For the Dominican Republic, the pelagic FAD fishery and the recreational billfish fishery were assessed. This circular details the information discovered during the FPI field work and discusses the resulting FPI scores. The information collected and analysed is used for the development of the business cases in both countries.

    This pilot study on the construction of socio-economic indicators was initiated by the Sub-Committee on Social Science, Scientific Advisory Committee, of the GFCM. It was carried out in collaboration with FAO/FIPP and COPEMED. The study focussed on a particular GFCM management unit, the Alboran Sea, in the hope that results would be applicable to other GFCM management units and the Mediterranean as a whole. Although the research team encountered difficulties in terms of non-availability of cert ain data and delays in the development of sampling schedules, the study was useful in demonstrating the possibilities of developing indicators and of their application for building an understandting of main socio-economic trends within a Mediterranean fisheries management unit.

    During 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) jointly undertook a project to identify and assess research and data from four Southeast Asian countries related to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 14.4.1 – the proportion of fish stocks within biologically sustainable levels. The goals of this project were: (1) to increase the visibility of research and datasets by making them searchable on OpenASFA, a system for creating, storing and publishing abstracts and bibliographic references; and (2) to analyse knowledge strengths and gaps in the region and make recommendations for improving the accessibility of research and data. This document presents the final report of the project, including the methodology, results and recommendations for future work.

    A permanent FAO Working Group composed of scientists from the coastal States, and from countries or organizations that play an active role in Northwest African pelagic fisheries, was established in March 2001. The overall objective of the Working Group is to assess the state of the small pelagic resources in Northwest Africa and make recommendations on fisheries management and exploitation options aimed at ensuring optimal and sustainable use of small pelagic fish resources for the benefit of coastal countries. The nineteenth meeting of the FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic Fish off Northwest Africa was held in Casablanca, Morocco, from 8–13 July 2019. The meeting was organized by FAO in collaboration with the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH) of Morocco. Un groupe de travail permanent de la FAO composé de scientifiques des États côtiers et de pays ou d’organisations jouant un rôle actif dans les pêcheries pélagiques d’Afrique du Nord-Ouest a été créé en mars 2001. L’objectif général du groupe de travail est d’évaluer l’état des ressources pélagiques du nord-ouest de l’Afrique et formuler des recommandations sur les options de gestion et d’exploitation de la pêche visant à assurer une utilisation optimale et durable des ressources halieutiques en petits pélagiques au profit des pays côtiers. La dix-neuvième réunion du groupe de travail de la FAO sur l'évaluation des petits poissons pélagiques au large de l'Afrique du Nord-Ouest s'est tenue à Casablanca (Maroc) du 8 au 13 juillet 2019. La réunion a été organisée par la FAO en collaboration avec l'Institut National de Recherche Halieutique (INRH) du Maroc.
