Synopsis (short abstract) The Rural Livelihoods Information System (RuLIS) is a set of harmonized household- and individual-level data and indicators on different aspects of livelihoods, including crops and livestock production, off-farm and non-farm income generating activities, households’ composition and demographics, agricultural inputs, technology use, access to social protection, time use, shocks and migration. RuLIS currently includes information from 39 countries, with increasing data coverage in time and space as more micro-data becomes available. RuLIS aims to provide critical information for understanding medium- and long- term trends in the structural transformation of agriculture and rural economies; and for the design of policies that promote and accompany social and economic transformation and enhancement. RuLIS provides data on a wide set of indicators, cross-tabulated by rural vs urban areas, gender and other variables; and standardized variables at the household and individual level. This brief uses RuLIS data to analyze survey data from eight Member States of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) to highlight the results of some key indicators related to living standards and conditions.

The Niger River Basin is a transboundary basin covering nine riparian countries to the Niger River that are increasingly putting pressure on the available water resources as their populations expand. Yet, the nine countries are also among the poorest in the world and adequate exploitation of the water of the basin could be part of a broader strategy for poverty reduction in these countries. Major challenges to that end are the lacking water infrastructure and growing vulnerability to extreme weather hazards as the climate changes. In that context, a better understanding of the state of water resources in the basin is a crucial departure point for any measures towards the sustainable use of water. The Water Accounting Plus (WA+) system designed by IHE Delft with its partners FAO and IWMI has been applied to gain full insights into the state of the water resources in the basin.

This document is a collection of briefs on countries in which food security has been affected by conflict and other crises. Here is an overview of some key numbers: people in conflict affected states are up to three times more likely to be undernourished than those who are living in more stable developing countries. The most recent projections suggest that approximately half of the global poor now live in states characterized by conflict and violence. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have a strong interest, and a potentially important role to play, in supporting transitions towards peace.

This brochure is produced on the occasion of the 5th Capitalization Meeting held in Addis Ababa from 30 May - 01 June 2017. The Project involves supporting 14 countries in Africa to implement EU Funded projects implementing the VGGT.
