Fertilizer use by crop in the Islamic Republic of Iran 2005

Low rainfall and high temperatures in Iran necessitate irrigation and over half the cultivated land is irrigated. Water availability and salinity are major constraints. Iran has long been a major importer of wheat but in 2003 and 2004 domestic wheat production almost satisfied the national demand. Several governmental measures supported production of the crop and favourable rainfall after a drought was also a major factor. Yields of both irrigated and rainfed wheat are low by world standards. Th e intensification of production, in particular through a greater efficiency of fertilization and irrigation, is required in order to achieve a permanent reduction in the country’s dependence on wheat imports, even under less favourable climatic conditions.

Report to the Agricultural Development Bank of Iran on the establishment of a Fisheries Development Branch 1975

The Agricultural Development Bank of Iran is becoming more and more involved in financing fishery industry development in the country. This involvement is either through joint ventures with Government organizations or with private capital and with the ADBI having equity participation in them, or providing credit to the fishery industry. In 1974 the World Bank approved a substantial loan for Iran for fishery development. This loan will also be channeled through the ADBI either to the end-borrower s or to the Southern Fisheries Company for redistribution to the artisanal fishermen. Both the present involvement of the ADBI in financing fishery industries development and the channeling of the World Bank's loan are new activities for the Bank. In order to perform its new functions, the ADBI wants to establish a fisheries development branch within its structure. The report analyses the new functions of the ADBI and defines the functions of the fisheries development branch to be formed. At the same time, due to a, lack of adequately experienced personnel, the Bank is thinking of employing a fishery development adviser who would assist also in the formation and operation of the branch during its first period of activity. The terms of reference of the consultant and also given in the report. One of the important problems to be resolved in the overall fisheries development of Iran is the balance between investment at sea and investment ashore. Therefore, the report contains a brief anal ysis of the fish processing capacities with particular reference to freezing and cold storing of fish ashore. Details regarding the investment, either existing or projected in the near future are given in the Annex to the report.

    Crop Prospects and Food Situation
Triannual Global Report, No. 2, July 2024
    2024
    Also available in:

The triannual Crop Prospects and Food Situation report provides a forward-looking analysis of the food situation across the globe, focusing on the cereal production outlook, market situation and food security conditions, with a particular attention on low-income food-deficit countries. FAO assesses that globally 45 countries/territories, including 33 in Africa, nine in Asia, two in Latin America and the Caribbean and one in Europe, are in need of external assistance for food. The severest levels of acute food insecurity are found in territories affected by conflict, including Palestine (Gaza Strip) and the Sudan, where the local population is also facing the risk of famine. Drought conditions in Southern Africa are expected to worsen acute food insecurity conditions in 2024. The report includes the global cereal production forecast for 2024 that scaled up and is now set to exceed the 2023 level.
