Synopsis (short abstract) This brochure gives a very brief overview in numbers and with a map of the acute food insecurity situation. It summarizes the crises causes by conflict, natural disasters and cross-border movements that continue to increase food insecurity in Afghanistan in 2017. Recurrent violence, economic slowdown, crop pests and natural hazards, such as drought and flooding, increased the vulnerability of already severely food-insecure populations, many living in hard-to-reach areas. Populations targeted for assistance include returnees, conflict-affected IDPs and people living in places of origin, people affected by natural disasters, non-displaced farmers, farmers affected by crop pests, and Pakistani refugees.

    Conflict, natural disasters, internal displacement and cross-border movements continue to increase food insecurity in Afghanistan. Unemployment, crop pests and natural hazards increase the vulnerability of already severely food-insecure populations, many living in hard-to-reach areas. The current drought is expected to detrimentally affect chronically food insecure farming households (approximately 2.2 million people), of which 1.4 million will become acutely food insecure and require emergency assistance over the coming months and into the next lean season. To assist 1 million people, FAO requires USD 21 million for the period January to December 2018.

    Now in its seventh year, the conflict has taken an even more devastating toll on the agriculture sector. In 2018, it is estimated that at least 1.5 million Syrians will be newly displaced, while around 1 million internally displaced people are expected to return to their communities of origin. As the crisis protracts in the Syrian Arab Republic, without immediate support, households in rural communities are no longer able to make a living through agriculture alone – their main source of income.
