Boosting Rural Development by Strengthening Family Farming in Sub-Saharan Africa - GCP/RAF/498/BRA 2021

The project was implemented in order to address and support the progressive implementation of family farming-related policies and programme, in particular in countries forming part of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. In addition, the project contributed to strengthening rural development policies by strengthening family farming in cooperation partner countries. While initially planned to cover Mozambique, Kenya, Ghana, Zimbabwe and Senegal, the project’s revised budget, work plan and activities meant that the number of countries targeted was reduced, with focus placed solely on Mozambique. The project was configured as a mechanism to strengthen technical capacities in Mozambique, in particular considering Brazil’s experience in strengthening family agriculture, food security and adding value to rural development.

Current food and agricultural systems have been successful in supplying large quantities of food to global markets. However, these systems are not capable of achieving sustainable development for all, as they heavily rely on external inputs and resource-intensive methods, which have led to environmental degradation and negative impacts on soil, water and biodiversity. To address this and in response to a demand presented by small-scale farmers and non-governmental organization (NGO) activists during the First Family Farmers Forum held in Sao Tome and Principe in 2015, this project was developed to promote sustainable family farming and agroecology within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). The project focused on establishing a "Centro de Competências da CPLP," namely a training centre on sustainable family farming, to provide technical training courses on agroecology to family farmers, government officials and NGOs. The centre's teaching methods were designed to integrate traditional knowledge while aiming to promote sustainability in agriculture. A second phase of the project was implemented in order to provide further support.

Support for ROPPA in Implementing The United Nations Decade of Family Farming (2019–2028) - TCP/SFW/3803 2024
    Also available in:

In West Africa, family farming employs around 62 percent of the workforce, supplying the bulk of agricultural (both unprocessed and processed) products to feed the population and satisfy the agrifood industry’s requirements. However, despite its clear importance, the vital role of family farming in combating poverty and food insecurity is not sufficiently considered in national investment programmes. Hence, in December 2017, the United Nations declared a United Nations Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF 2019–2028) to focus on family farming as a central global priority for ten years. A Global Action Plan was devised to implement the UNDFF. This plan aims to develop practical, coordinated actions to tackle the challenges faced by family farmers, enhance their capacity to invest, and make full use of their contributions. It includes seven pillars designed to provide comprehensive guidance for all stakeholders, including the international community, regional entities, civil society organizations, the private sector, and farmers’ organizations, such as the Network of Peasant and Producers' Organizations of West Africa (ROPPA).
