Synopsis (short abstract) Social protection is the set of policies and programmes aimed at preventing or protecting all people against poverty, vulnerability, and social exclusion throughout their lifecycles, particularly the most vulnerable groups. This poster will serve to demonstrate the efforts - and advancements made - in reducing rural poverty and increasing resilience through FAO strategic programmes, such as SP3 and SP5 in recent years. It aims to provide to donors, partners, and policy-makers with the information they need to gain awareness of the impacts of social protection initiatives, and to invest in social protection as a valid pathway out of poverty and hunger. The expected results of this product is an increase awareness of the benefits of social protection initiatives, an increase in visibility of countries' progress in areas pertaining to food insecurity and nutrition and act as springboard to more funding opportunities.

    The aim of this study is to provide readers with an overview of how agricultural insurance and social protection interventions can complement each other, within the frame of disaster risk management for vulnerable agricultural actors. Specifically, it aims to underline the operational nuances, challenges, opportunities and constraints associated with employing agricultural insurance within social protection systems. Furthermore, it presents a number of practical lessons learned and considerations that can be used by relevant public stakeholders (such as local policymakers and development agencies) to introduce aspects of agricultural insurance in programmes and initiatives that seek to strengthen social protection for vulnerable farmers.

    As the quality of climate risk information and scientific forecasting has continued to improve, the imperative to act in advance of an imminent shock in order to protect people, assets and livelihoods has also gained notable attention and increasing investment. Recognizing this opportunity, some governments, and development and humanitarian partners are trying to gain a better understanding of the potential of social protection to deliver support ahead of a forecasted shock, including exploring options to systematically integrate anticipatory action approaches within existing national social protection systems. As such, this document discusses the conceptual and practical linkages between these two topics alongside presenting four country case studies, thereby contributing to the literature on how social protection and anticipatory action can protect agricultural livelihoods.

    Supporting the Adoption of Climate-Smart Agriculture through Social Protection and Agricultural Interventions - GCP/GLO/480/IRE 2024

    Adopting climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices is a crucial measure that farmers can take to protect their livelihoods and production systems from the harmful effects of climate change; however, financial constraints often limit their ability to adopt these practices. Under a pilot project (FMM/GLO/148/MUL), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) implemented an approach that connected social protection measures with Farmer Field Schools (FFS) in the Mwanza and Neno districts of Malawi. The pilot approach divided FFS participants into three groups: one that received FFS training and a cash transfer, one that received FFS training and agricultural inputs, and one that only benefited from the FFS training. This project was subsequently formulated to measure the impact of these interventions on the adoption of CSA practices among the three groups through an Impact Evaluation (IE).
