Synopsis (short abstract) Cattle rearing is important for the livelihoods of subsistence farmers in the Republic of Moldova. Despite great potential to further develop the dairy sector, cattle populations are decreasing and total milk and beef production levels remain relatively low. Neither a national cattle breeding programme nor a performance record keeping system exist, further stifling potential growth. Thus, this project aimed to improve genetic resources in the livestock sector and develop a strategy to manage and monitor animal genetic resources, improve cattle breeding and re-introduce milk quality analyses and performance recording.

    Agriculture is a key sector in the Moldovan economy. Seventy five percent of the population lives in rural areas and depends on agriculture and related activities for their livelihoods. However, agriculture in the region usually suffers from the negative incidence of a number of pests and diseases, which cause significant economic damage. At the same time, the lack of farmers’ knowledge and capacity in crop and pest management is a serious threat for the future development of agriculture. The project aimed to strengthen the capacities of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment (MARDE) and the Phytosanitary Service of the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) to develop a national programme for the adaptation and implementation of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system in the country; and to increase farmer’s skills and knowledge in order to accelerate the adaptation of IPM principles to farming conditions.
