No results found.The 2023 annual meeting of the ICES-FAO Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour (WGFTFB) and the International Symposium on “Innovations in Fishing Technologies for Sustainable and Resilient Fisheries” was held from 13 to 17 February 2023 in Kochi, India. The symposium was hosted by FAO in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, organized by the Bay of Bengal Programme Intergovernmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO) and National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Fisheries Institutes and State Fisheries Universities. The symposium brought together 325 participants comprising of scientists, researchers, officials, policymakers, diplomats, industry, entrepreneurs, and students from 32 countries both online and offline delivering a total of 137 presentations providing a platform for discussions on the challenges facing world fisheries including depleted fish stocks, habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, fish loss and wastage bycatch, and ghost fishing. This report summarizes the symposium on “Innovations in Fishing Technologies for Sustainable and Resilient Fisheries” which comprised of eight thematic sessions: (i) active gears (ii) passive gears (iii)indicators (iv) abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) (v) survival/behaviour/physiology (vi) energy efficiency (vii) general topics and (viii) gear design. -

No results found.Africa Sustainable Livestock 2050 (ASL2050) is drawing lessons out of the past growth of the livestock sector in Asia to assist countries in the African continent to formulate policies that ensure a sustainable growth of livestock, from an environmental, public health and social perspective. This document is part of a series of six documents within the ASL2050 project comparing livestock sector development in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. These broad overviews sharpen our understanding, highlight contrasts and similarities, test hypotheses, and inform the decision-making process. This paper presents and discusses data and statistics on the drivers of livestock sector development in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. These comprise population and income and natural resource endowments, including land, water and livestock. -

No results found.To make small-scale fisheries in Thailand more sustainable, fishers need to invest in responsible fishing operations and technologies, reduce overfishing, contribute to fisheries management, and implement climate change adaptation measures. The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center and FAO carried out an assessment of the sustainability of currently used fishing technologies and operations in Thailand, to identify options for innovation and improvements. This circular provides information on the current technological status of the Thai fishing fleets, the costs of fishing operations, the management of the main fisheries, and on the status of the main marine fisheries resources targeted by the various fishing fleets. Options for introducing technological innovations for fishing vessels include the reconfiguration of the hull by installing a bulbous bow, stabilizing fins, duct propellors and wave resistance reduction measures. On-board equipment innovations identified include hydraulic hauling systems, power blocks, refrigeration systems, fuel flow monitoring systems, solar panels, and LED lights. To improve safety, vessel owners are recommended to provide lifesaving equipment, radio communications and firefighting equipment, first aid kits, cooking and sanitation facilities, emergency stops on winches and hauling devices, lightning conductors, and distress signal devices. Fishing gear innovations such as circle hooks, low-resistance gears, turtle excluder devices, juvenile and trash excluder devices, and fish aggregating devices are also important innovations for fishing vessel owners to consider. This circular gives fishing vessel owners and financial service providers in Thailand insights in the innovations available, to make better informed fisheries investment decisions.
