No results found.Forest Stewardship Council responsible forest management certification ensures that - not only forests are managed through sustainable practices - but also that FSC certified forestry companies operate in a socially responsible manner, respecting the rights of the people that live in and depend on the forest. In order to achieve this, the involvement of indigenous and non-indigenous communities in the framework of FSC certification is key. This paper describes the various engagement opportunities that FSC certification offers to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities through practical case studies across the globe: Case #1: Sweden and Finland: Sami Indigenous People; Case #2: Mexico: Indigenous communities: Ixtlán de Juarez, Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro; Case #3: Peru: Indigenous communities: Belgica, Calleria, Buenos Aires, Junin Pablo, Roya, Nuevo Loreto; Case #4: Guatemala: Association of Forest Communities; Case #5: Chile: Mapuche Indigenous People. The case studies illustrate various types of collaboration: indigenous associations proactively involved in defining national FSC standards, Indigenous communities successfully managing Amazonian and coniferous natural forest, responsibilities of forest management enterprises towards communities (consultation and mitigation of impacts), positive engagement between FSC certified entities and Indigenous Peoples (conflict resolution), dispute resolution mechanisms, workshops on forestry topics involving Indigenous communities and the involvement of Indigenous Peoples in high level political discussions at FSC. These case studies demonstrate that FSC certification provides a solid foundation for the creation of engagement opportunities with Indigenous Peoples, benefiting the communities involved and delivering on its mission of promoting socially responsible forest management worldwide. No results found.The Inception Workshop for the Developing Organizational Capacity for Ecosystem Stewardship and Livelihoods in Caribbean Small-Scale Fisheries (StewardFish) project was convened at United Nations House, in Barbados, from 13 to 14 September 2018. In attendance, were representatives of the fisheries authorities (national executing partners) from the seven project countries, five regional executing partner organizations (CANARI, CERMES-UWI, CNFO, CRFM, WECAFC), fisherfolk leaders from national fisherfolk organizations/lead primary fisherfolk organizations in the project countries as well as representatives from other fisheries-related national and regional agencies. The overall objective of the workshop was to bring together key partners and stakeholders who would be involved in the delivery of the project to ensure that there was a common understanding of the project objectives, components, outcomes, outputs and planned activities as well as the roles and responsibilities of all partners. Achievements of the workshop included (i) review and agreement on the project institutional and implementation arrangements; (ii) review and agreement on the project components, outcomes, outputs and planned activities and the results matrix; (iii) review and adjustments to country work plans; (iv) mapping out of the LOAs; and (iv) review and agreement on the monitoring and evaluation mechanism. -

No results found.The product was given to staff and visitors of the MMDC, comprising Palauans, Americans and Japanese, to taste. The end product had a matt, dark amber to woody colour, the texture being chewy but not unpleasantly so. The taste being only slightly salty, with a light sweetness and a clear clam taste. The smoked mantle took up the shape of a ring. This product being considered more tasty, if more chewy than the adductor muscle. The coloured part of the processed mantle ended up a ve ry dark green, almost black, with a certain vegetable taste to it. Some tasters in the panel objected to this part of the meat, but it was considered important to leave it in order to give the product a typical “giant clam” appearance, and to avoid further weight loss. The surface of the cut appeared translucent white. The adductor muscle, although more appealing in aspect, had a blander taste and a more outspoken “grain” in the structure. The colour of the cut is of a more opaque whit e. After trials, the panel found the smoked guts to be a less valuable product, although the taste is good. They aimed to identify the critical loss points in the selected supply chains, the key stages at which food losses occur, why they occur, the extent and impact of food losses and the economic, social and environmental implications of the food losses. Furthermore, these studies also evaluated the feasibility of potential interventions to reduce food losses and waste.
