Synopsis (short abstract) The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) is a semi-public development agency of the Philippines Government, dedicated to planning and implementation of development plans of the Laguna de Bay region. That region includes the 90 000 ha Laguna Lake. The LLDA requested technical assistance in developing the lake fishery. This report concerns fish culture aspects of the overall fishery studies. The lake has been extensively studied in the past with respect to its fishery production and aquatic biota. A United Nations feasibility survey on multipurpose development of the lake for water supply, irrigation, land reclamation and fisheries was completed as a contractor study in December 1970 and is currently under review by the United Nations Office of Technical Co-operation. In general, the lake has been found to have high productivity for fish, estimated to be 0.4 t/ha. However, the existing species, which form the bulk of the lake catch, are small and of low market value. These do not r epresent a good combination to utilize the high level of natural fish food sources available in the lake. This report recommends that priority be given to development of fish culture in the lake by means of pens, corrals and other lake water type enclosures. The establishment of a fish hatchery and experimental station is found essential for this type of development. The proposed station would produce fingerlings and determine species combinations, rates of stocking, supplemental feed requirem ents, design of the pen structures and other related problems. Potential economic returns from 5 000 ha of lake enclosures for fish culture are estimated to yield annually 10 000 t of fish and a net income of 7 to 8 million. The LLDA has already initiated a programme for fishery development through construction and operation of a 40 ha fish corral on the lake at Looc Cove.

    The development of fish culture in Burma from May 1967 to December 1970 is reviewed in this report. Highest priority is given to the solution of the problem of acute shortage of fish seed from cultivated species. Induced breeding of indigenous carps during 1967 by pituitary hormone injections and subsequently the commercial production of fish seed is the first successful achievement. The report shows that it is possible to meet the country's entire present requirements of seed and avoid collecti on of seed from natural sources. Other important achievements of this project are demonstrations of the technique of hybridization in fishes for producing improved varieties, improvement in the technique of nursery practices for higher survival of fry, better management of farm ponds, the introduction and acclimatization of the quick-growing phytophagous Chinese carps and demonstrations of increased production of fish by intensive fish culture.

    El presente informe se compone de tres partes: En la primera parte se proporcionan algunos antecedentes que explican el nuevo marco de funcionamiento de la economía cubana como consecuencia de los cambios políticos, económicos y sociales surgidos con el nuevo Gobierno revolucionario desde 1959. Este tipo de información no se obtiene fácilmente, debido a que los acontecimientos son relativamente recientes y todavía no existen publicaciones regulares -de carácter estadístico y económico- que d escriban el resultado de la actividad económica en Cuba. A pesar de esas dificultades el experto consideró importante hacer un esfuerzo para tener una visión generalizada de la evolución de la economía cubana en estos últimos cinco años y la perspectiva que se perfila en el futuro, ya que sin estos antecedentes, es difícil comprender el desarrollo y la planificación del sector pesquero o de cualquier otro sector de la economía cubana en la actualidad. En la segunda parte se hace un análisis de la pesca en Cuba durante el período 1960–1965 destacando los aspectos institucionales como la estructura del Instituto Nacional de la Pesca, la industrialización y distribución de productos pesqueros, el comercio exterior de la pesca, el consumo de pescados y mariscos, la investigación científica y la asistencia técnica. Todo este análisis sirve de diagnóstico para los efectos de la elaboración del plan. En la tercera parte se hace un análisis de los antecedentes sobre el plan pesquero 1966 –1970, que se utilizaron en los trabajos de la Comisión. En primer lugar se dan a conocer los aspectos metodológicos para elaborar el plan, para seguir con las orientaciones y alternativas del plan pesquero 1966–1970.

    An FAO/UNDP(TA) Fish Culturist served in Nepal intermittently from 1963 to 1968 to aid in the development of fish culture. Various fish pond sites were surveyed, lay-out plans of pond systems were made, and construction specifications for bunds, water leads, monks, inlets and outlets were prepared. Equipment and facilities needed to make the fish ponds function properly were also designed and constructed. Rice-cum-fish culture trials were made and demonstrated. Upon the request of the Gove rnment, technical assistance was rendered to the private sector, and training given to the staff of the Department of Fisheries and various fish farms. This report includes detailed plans of construction and management programmes for two major government fish farms (Pipley and Bhandar Hardi); execution of these programmes is being carried out with the assistance of the World Food Programme (WFP). Recommendations for the overall development of fish culture in Nepal are enumerated
