Synopsis (short abstract) FAN 38 is a special issue dedicated to the theme "Role of Aquaculture in Sustainable Development" of the High Level Special Event on Aquaculture (Rome, Italy, November 2007 during the 37th FAO Conference in Rome). It brings the current state of aquaculture, current contribution, future challenges and prospects. Emerging issues, challenges and opportunities facing different aquaculture producing regions and current views on trade and safety, policy and planning, aquaculture statistics and informa tion databases are also presented. A range of thematic activities/events concerned with sustainable aquaculture development including a brief description of projects and publications are also included in this issue.

    FAN 37 editorial talks about Information: a must for responsible aquaculture. Four articles highlighted the different aspects of information (information sharing via aquatic commons, improving information on inland fisheries, global gateway to GIS/remote sensing/mapping and aquatic animal biosecurity information).     A workshop of the EIFAC ad hoc Working Party on Prevention and Control of Bird Predation was held in Bonn, Germany from 20 to 21 November 2007 with the participation of 29 representatives from 13 EIFAC member states. The ad hoc Working Party discussed cormorant – fisheries issues and reviewed the legal situation for the protection and control of cormorants in EIFAC member countries. On the basis of these discussions four recommendations were formulated, including the promotion of preparation and effective implementation of a European Cormorant Management Plan.
