Synopsis (short abstract) Food security and livelihoods are threatened by high food prices and persistent conflict and civil unrest which also limit access to food assistance. Despite the good harvests of the 2010 season, different agencies are extremely concerned about the hunger situation which is reported as alarming or very high. Insecurity and violence have increased in the last few months as protests in major cities are taking place against the governments. The Government is supported by international agencie s in assisting food insecure people, IDPs and refugees.

    The prices of basic commodities remained high, which together with fuel shortage, are limiting households' food access and resulting in deteriorating food security conditions. International agencies report a situation of food and humanitarian crisis with an estimated 1.8 million people in need of food and emergency assistance. Continuing conflicts and insecurity particularly in governorates of Arhab, Sana'a and Abyan, together with limited humanitarian access are major drivers of food insecu rity among IDPs populations. Conflict and insecurity have disrupted government's activities in the area of food and agriculture development

    High food prices and political instability have pushed additional poor households into a condition of extreme food insecurity. Widespread lack of access to food is reported. Food distributions by international agencies are constrained by conflict and high levels of insecurity. According to UNHCR some 320,000 people are internally displaced while some 212,000 are Somali refugees fleeing the country as conflict continues. There are no government measures on agriculture and food security du ring the reporting period.
