Synopsis (short abstract) This document consists of comprehensive guidance for producing FAO publications throughout all stages of the process, from conceptualization to dissemination and beyond. It is divided into sections focusing on matters regarding the workflow, visual identity, content and structure of FAO publications. In addition to FAOSTYLE in six languages, this guidance also includes: "Publishing policy", providing high-level guidance aimed at those involved in the creation or approval of a publishing plan; "Authorship and plagiarism guidelines", outlining the principles and criteria for authorship of FAO publications; "Graphic design guidelines", focusing on the practical application of FAO's visual identity and design standards; “Responsible use of AI in publishing”, covering how to use AI responsibly and ethically when producing a publication; and “Open Access policy”, a summary of the policy that encourages the wide use, reproduction and dissemination of the intellectual property that FAO produces. Publishing at FAO is a living document and will continue to evolve as publishing practices evolve. Two new sections on the production of digital publications and managing a publishing project are forthcoming in 2025. Last updated February 2025.

    This document presents the results of the EIFAC Ad Hoc Working Party on Handling of Fishes in Fisheries and Aquaculture, including the report of its workshop held from 24 to 26 March 2004 in Utrecht, Netherlands. The welfare of fishes has become a subject of attention in recent years. Concerns have been raised about the potential for infringed fish welfare in fisheries, aquaculture and fisheries research. The Ad Hoc Working Party agreed that handling of fishes must be carried out in a responsible way. Fishes show reactions to injurious stimuli. These stimuli result in physiological stress responses. Depending on the duration and intensity of the exposure to the stressor, the stress response varies from acute to chronic. Handling causing injuries and damage to the fishes should be avoided in fisheries, aquaculture and fisheries research. To ensure the welfare of fish in commercial fisheries, recreational fisheries and aquaculture, sufficient legislation and regulat ion is necessary. All EIFAC member countries discussed in this report have legislation and regulations concerning animal welfare. However, some of the legislation and regulations do not provide specific attention to fish welfare.

    Attached is an addendum to the list of substances in Annex 1 (pt. 1.3 -Toxicological evaluation, exposure assessment and establishment of specifications for certain flavouring agents and pt. 1.4 Revision of specification for certain flavourings) scheduled for evaluation or re-evaluation at the 86th meeting of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA).
