Synopsis (short abstract) The document aims to contribute to improved working conditions for women in the Latin American banana industry by providing guidelines for the healthy and safe employment of women workers, in an industry that has historically been dominated by men. It counts on contributions from women leaders of the Coordinating Body of Latin American Banana and Agro-industrial Unions , who indicate the perceived hazards and risks faced by women workers across the main banana exporting countries in Latin America – namely Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Guatemala – and further provides an overview of key legislations addressing employers' duties and rights of workers on health and safety and gender-related aspects (i.e. maternity protection and breastfeeding, violence and harassment in the workplace, etc.). It ultimately highlights the health and safety hazards and risks faced by all women workers, including as a result of biological processes specific to women, and outlines the steps needed to conduct gender-sensitive risk assessments and the implementation of risk control measures to ensure a healthy and safe work environment for women workers. The publication contributes to one of the four betters, namely a better life.
