Synopsis (short abstract) The agriculture sector is one of the major income generating sectors in Sierra Leone and more than 70 percent of the population is engaged in subsistence farming. The outbreak of the Ebola virus disease caused a major disruption to farming activities, closing periodic markets, creating price volatility and worsening food security in the country. Women play a crucial role in farming, accounting for nearly 60 percent of the total workforce, but they generally lack access to fundamental agricultural inputs (improved technologies, extension services or access to credit services). Therefore, this project aimed to enhance the participation of women in agriculture by piloting a cooperative model for farm-based organizations and providing women farmers with relevant training and business skills development, thereby improving their productive capacity and incomes.

    Access to and control over land is an essential prerequisite ofthe right to adequate food in rural areas of Sierra Leone. Since 2014,with technical support from FAO, Sierra Leone has supportedthe implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines on the ResponsibleGovernance of Tenure of Lands, Fisheries and Forests in the Contextof National Food Security (VGGT), embedding the principles ofthe Guidelines in the country’s National Land Policy (NLP).As the government considered possible NLP implementationstrategies, a stronger framework for addressing women’s land rightsin Sierra Leone was imperative to ensuring that rural women inthe provinces were able to negotiate, claim and defend their rightsand access.

    FAO developed this manual, in collaboration with Solidaridad West Africa, to support trainers in preparing and delivering the training on empowering rural women to engage in responsible agricultural investments (RAI). The design of this training programme is based upon a specific methodology that meets the learning needs of rural women in Sierra Leone.Building upon lessons learned from the first training and dialogue events piloted by FAO and Solidaridad West Africa in Bo, Bombali, Kenema, and Port Loko districts in 2022, the manual is a step-by-step guide which provides all the necessary materials for trainers to replicate the RAI training for rural women in Sierra Leone.This manual aims to be a valuable tool for developing capacities on RAI at the grassroots level.

    The Land Tenure Journal is published by FAO as a medium for the dissemination of information and views on tenure of land and other natural resources in the framework of the Voluntary Guidelines for the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) which is a standard for FAO’s work on tenure. The audience consists of people having interest in tenure of land and other resources in its broadest technical, economic, political and social senses. The prime beneficiaries include practitioners and professionals from international and national agencies, central and local governments, civil society organizations and academia. Articles are published in English, French or Spanish. The content of the Journal reflects the versatile priorities of FAO’s Tenure Governance normative and field programs as well as priorities of the Journal’s audience. The Journal aims to present a holistic and politically, culturally and regionally diversified view on tenure of land and other natural resources.
