Synopsis (short abstract) Analysis of various sources of energy data shows that biomass energy is at present an important source of energy with biomass energy being after oil, coal and natural gas the most important fuel on a worldwide basis. At the same time it is also clear that traditional use of biomass energy is still far higher than that used for modern applications. Although the share of modern biomass energy viz-a-viz traditional biomass energy use will rise in the future, there is at the same time also no doubt that the latter will continue to be important for the near future. This paper was presented during RWEDP's International Consultation on Wood Energy, Health and Climate, which was held on 7-9 October, 1999 in Thailand.

    In recent years, global interest in renewable energy resources, including biomass, has burgeoned. Biomass is used predominantly in developing countries, mostly in the form of wood and agricultural residues, as fuel for cooking and heating. This thematic study examines the current situation and trends as regards biomass energy consumption and analyzes the driving forces influencing change. It also assesses probable scenarios for development of various biomass energy segments in the Asia-Pacific r egion. Wood-based energy is the main focus in the study.

    This paper discusses the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning model(LEAP), and provides exercises on data analysis for energy planning, focussing on wood energy. The exercises are used by RWEDP during LEAP tutorials for its member countries. LEAP is an energy planning model that covers energy demand, transformation and supply. It uses a simulation approach to represent the current energy situation for a given area and to develop forecasts for the future under certain assumptions. LEAP is very appropriate for wood energy planning because it contains a land use module that can be used to assess available wood resources.
