No results found.The European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-mouth Disease (EuFMD) is a specialist intergovernmental body within the legal framework of FAO. The 37 member states (MSs) of the EuFMD include 28 European Union countries and those European countries in Eastern Europe and the Southern Mediterranean that share borders with EuFMD member states. The EuFMD, which is governed by its member states and fully funded by its members, carries out actions that are funded by specific contracts with the European Commission (EC) and others. This report describes activities funded by the EC and carried out by the EuFMD between 2009 and 2013. The final beneficiaries of the project activities were livestock keepers in Europe and neighbourhood countries, and consumers (through reduced costs of animal proteins of ruminant and porcine origin). In addition to actions conducted in the 37 member states of the EuFMD, activities took place in East and West Africa as locations for the training of Europeans or the improvement of surveillance for FMD.

Seed sector regulatory framework
2018This toolkit – made available in English, French and Spanish – will be promoted as practical guidance to assist in the implementation of the national seed strategies. It will provide a number of practical capacity building tools for essential stages of the seed value chain and targeted primarily at seed sector practitioners who will participate in special training workshops to acquire pertinent technical knowledge and will be expected in return to create a multiplier effect through further follow-up FFS trainings down to the level of seed traders and farmers. In doing so, the toolkit will be used as guidance for conducting country-led workshops and other training activities aimed at strengthening quality seed delivery systems and seed regulatory mechanisms in selected countries. The development of capacity in the production of high quality seeds, the seed replacement rates, true seed cost and realistic seed pricing mechanisms as well as the role of different stakeholders are of critical importance in the process of the formulation of national seed policies, which is one of the core areas of FAO’s delivery at the national level. -

This report is the result of an inclusive process involving more than 300 scientists from around the world under the auspices of the FAO’s Global Soil Partnership and its Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative, and the European Commission. It presents concisely the state of knowledge on soil biodiversity, the threats to it, and the solutions that soil biodiversity can provide to problems in different fields. It also represents a valuable contribution to raising awareness of the importance of soil biodiversity and highlighting its role in finding solutions to today's global threats. -
