No results found.The present report is the outcome of the joint call on good practices on Digital Excellence in Agriculture, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Office for Europe and Office for CIS and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations Office for Europe and Central Asia. The document presents a summary version of the 171 eligible submissions of good practices and innovative solutions advancing the digital transformation of agriculture in Europe and Central Asia. This call complements the joint FAO-ITU review on the Status of Digital Agriculture in 18 countries of Europe and Central Asia (ITU-FAO, 2020)1 and provides evidence on how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play an emerging role in the agriculture landscapes of the regions, acting as an engine for agricultural development. However, the adoption of digital technologies in agriculture differs from country to country, and from region to region. The review in the 18 countries highlighted that smallholder farmers have yet to experience the widespread benefits of this digital transformation, and they are lagging behind when it comes to the adoption of digital agriculture solutions and innovations due to lack of trust in the potential of ICTs, limited digital skills, connectivity issues and restricted availability of ICT-based solutions to utilize and scale up. Realizing the full potential of digital agriculture transformation requires identifying, sharing and implementing best practices and proven solutions across countries, involving all actors in participatory processes. -

No results found.This study contributes to the work stream on digital sequence information of FAO’s Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (GRFA). It presents key practices and experiences related to the ways in which digital sequence information (DSI) is generated, stored, accessed, and used for research and development related to GRFA. The report explores the availability and accessibility of DSI to the research community and the private sector in all parts of the world. It also presents solutions currently being discussed for access to, and use of, DSI and the sharing of benefits arising from such use. In addition, the study discusses applications of DSI that are relevant to GRFA, including DSI that is not derived from GRFA but nevertheless contributes to their identification, characterization, use, improvement and conservation. Further, the report addresses obstacles to access and use of DSI and identifies the need for capacity building to address global imbalance in its generation and use. The study demonstrates the many existing and potential applications of DSI that are highly relevant to GRFA whilst stressing the importance of open access to data to facilitate research and development in food and agriculture. It emphasises that the generation, storage, accessibility and use of DSI are fundamental to the efforts to make agriculture more sustainable. Access to, and use of, DSI face serious obstacles in many countries. There is a pressing need to address the root causes of these problems, which include lack of: technical infrastructure, financial and human resources, educational and training opportunities, scientific collaboration, computing infrastructure, reliable electricity and high-speed internet. The study concludes that there is a need for a regulatory environment that facilitates access to DSI whilst also maintaining the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from its use. -
Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetDigital Villages in Tajikistan 2024Recognizing the opportunities, but also the potential risks, offered by ICT for accelerating agricultural and rural development, in January 2021 FAO launched the Digital Villages Initiative (DVI) with the ambitious goal to convert at least 1000 villages around the world into Digital Villages. With DVI, FAO is supporting a digital rural transformation process to address agrifood systems’ challenges and improve the livelihoods and resilience of rural communities. The flyer details the activities that are ongoing as part of the digital Villages initiative in Tajikistan. Digital Villages enhance rural resilience and food security by providing farmers with digital tools for accessing inputs, market information, and alternative sales channels online. They deliver real-time data on prices, weather, and pests, enabling informed decisions on crop management and purchasing. These initiatives also simplify obtaining financial aid and insurance, with streamlined online applications and digital fund reception. This contributes to the development of the four betters and the achievement of SDG goals through localization facilitated through digitalization. The projects detailed in the flyer can be used for general information for other interested countries and regions.
