No results found.In the Europe and Central Asia region, and particularly the non European Union countries, food loss and waste ( have major implications on food and nutrition security, as a result of inefficiencies in the food value chains This leads to lower availability of micronutrient rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables reduced income of smallholder farmers, who are major food producers and increased food prices, affecting urban consumers In addition food loss and waste significantly contribute to greenhouse gas ( emissions and the negative effects of climate change As such, FLW constitutes a vast, persistent and complicated problem, which directly relates to national and corporate policies, natural resources, climate change, economies and markets, people’s behaviour and culture social conditions, technology, infrastructure and investments Against this background, the project aimed to reduce FLW in the context of national food systems and climate change Specifically, the project would assist four countries, Albania, Armenia, North Macedonia and the Republic of Moldova, to develop and implement national strategies towards FLW reduction, tailored to the specific needs of each country and as part of the relevant national strategies for agricultural development, food security, and climate change mitigation. -

No results found.Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3 of the UN 2030 Agenda calls for halving per capita global food waste (FW) from retail to households. Food waste (FW) prevention and reduction play a major role in ensuring the sustainability of food systems as well as effective Solid Waste Management (SWM). A coherent, coordinated, and complementary approach to quantification causes identification, and scaling up feasible solutions is necessary. Awareness-raising and capacity development for food supply chain actors, the public sector, and civil society organizations is required for successful interventions. The Project Innovative approaches to reduce, recycle and reuse FW in urban Sri Lanka was implemented under the oversight of the Ministry of Urban Development, and Housing in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) from June 2019 to August 2021. The project produced a series of reports and papers including FAO and IWMI (2021a), FAO and IWMI (2021b), FAO and IWMI (2021c), and FAO and IWMI (2021d) that were used in the awareness creation and capacity development programmes. The major output of the Project was to facilitate knowledge development for and drafting of the Urban Roadmap on FW Prevention, Reduction, Management in Sri Lanka, that includes a comprehensive Action Plan with Monitoring and Evaluation criteria. The objective of this report is to summarize the proceedings of the consultations and sensitization sessions conducted from June 2019 to June 2021. -

Funded by the Government of the Republic of Turkey, the project aims to assist Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in developing measures to reduce food loss and waste. In particular, the project will support the recipient countries to: • develop national gender-sensitive strategic policy and action plans to reduce FLW; • establish FLW data collection systems, as well as measure and monitor FLW; • improve knowledge management and capacities; and • raise awareness and understanding of FLW (causes, impact and solutions) among actors in all sectors, including consumers, at national and regional level, leaving no one behind.
