No results found.Forests play major roles in climate change. They contribute carbon emissions when destroyed or degraded and they suffer from changing climate, drought and extreme weather. Managed sustainably, they can provide a unique environmental service by removing excess carbon from the atmosphere, storing it in biomass, soils and products. In addition, sustainably produced wood fuels offer an environmentally benign alternative to fossil fuels. During the 7th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Marrakech, Morocco, in 2001, governments agreed on the final framework for implementing the Kyoto Protocol, which obligates industrialized countries to reduce their net greenhouse gas contribution by country-specific, fixed amounts. -

Drawing on the latest data on global farm distribution, farm sizes and crop production, the report highlights how the scale at which land is managed shapes both the constraints and the opportunities for adopting sustainable land use and management practices. It also underscores the importance of policymaking that encompasses regulatory and incentive-based measures, tailored to the varied conditions and scales of land use, to avoid, reduce and reverse land degradation. -

Post-event analysis of such events has indicated the importance of more effective use of risk communication principles and practices. Countries are encouraged to develop and assess their existing risk communication plans and practices applied to food safety and to learn from their own or other countries’ experiences. As the use of the Internet and social media technologies increases both in developed and developing countries, the public’s demand for greater transparency and more salient food safety risk information can be expected, confirming the importance of effective risk communication strategies in food safety and the broader public health sector. The purpose of this Handbook is to support countries, national food safety authorities and food chain stakeholders in establishing or enhancing risk communication practice and capacity in the food safety sector. This Handbook focuses on practical principles and best practices of risk communication to support risk management of adverse food safety (including quality) events associated with biological, chemical or physical hazards. The focus of this Handbook is on the use of risk communication in the process of risk analysis to manage both emergency food safety risks (e.g. foodborne illness outbreaks) and non-emergency or more enduring food safety issues (e.g. food safety and health promotion campaigns). The Handbook begins with a broad overview of the key goals and concepts of risk communication.

But climate change is undermining the livelihoods and food security of the rural poor, who constitute almost 80 percent of the world’s poor. The effects of climate change on our ecosystems are already severe and widespread. Climate change brings a cascade of impacts from agroecosystems to livelihoods. Climate change impacts directly agroecosystems, which in turn has a potential impact on agricultural production, which drives economic and social impacts, which impact livelihoods. In other words, impacts translate from climate to the environment, to the productive sphere, to economic and social dimensions. Therefore, ensuring food security in the face of climate change is among the most daunting challenges facing humankind. Action is urgently needed now to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience of food systems to ensure food security and good nutrition for all.
