Synopsis (short abstract) Future generations are shaped by the opportunities afforded now to youth. Yet youth - defined here as those between 15-24 years of age – make up close to half the world’s unemployed. Rural rates of unemployment are particularly high. This is especially so for young women. United Nations figures class 75 percent of youth as underutilised. By this they mean: unemployed, in irregular (informal jobs), or outside of formal education and training. Underutilised youth are a missed opportunity. This report is written for the leaders of Forest and Farm Producer Organisations (FFPOs). In rural areas, FFPOs are often the major, or sometimes only employers. Set up to pursue the values of their members, FFPOs contribute to rural prosperity: namely ‘a negotiated vision of that which people value and have reason to value in line with the common good’. All people have their own vision of what prosperity looks like – and that is why a negotiation of a collective vision is important – so that the perceptions of different groups of people, such as youth, are taken into account.

    Rural Youth Action Plan 2022

    The FAO Conference in 2017 endorsed the call to develop a rural youth action plan that addresses the importance of making rural areas more attractive for young women and men. Under the aegis of the Committee on Agriculture (COAG), the Rural Youth Action Plan (RYAP) was developed and presented at COAG’s Twenty- seventh Session in 2020. The Plan presents a five-year Action Plan (2021–2025), aligned to five thematic areas (or pillars) with the goal of contributing to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by equally empowering rural young women and men. The RYAP is embedded in FAO’s Medium Term Plan (2022–2025), and serves as a key performance indicator (KPI) for the cross cutting theme on youth.

    Small-scale forest enterprises 1987

    In response to government concerns, FAO has begun to develop more information on the nature of small forest enterprises, their contributions to rural incomes, the constraints that hold the small entrepreneur back, and the opportunities that strengthening this sector hold for improved rural incomes. An initial step was the commissioning of a number of case-studies. This was followed by the convening of an expert consultation in Rome in October 1986, on which the lead article by Arnold, Chipeta an d Fisseha in this issue is based, the proceedings of which will be published as an FAO Forestry Paper in late 1987. The other two "theme" articles are a report on charcoaling enterprises in Kenya by M. Kinyanjui and an assessment of the potential of forestry cooperatives by K. Kilander.
