    There is a wide variety of small ruminant production systems globally. This diversity means that there is a great variety of production systems with different production intensities and purposes within and among countries. The production of small ruminant’s products, is associated with significant use of natural resources such as land, water or nutrients and contributes to environmental issues such as GHG, loss of nutrient to water and air and biodiversity loss. The assessment of these impacts, however, is challenging due to the internationalisation of small ruminants supply chains as well as the lack of data and harmonisation of scientific methods. Conscious of these challenges, the LEAP Partnership established in 2014 a technical advisory group to develop comprehensive guidelines on the assessment of the environmental performance of small ruminants supply chains.

    Demand for livestock products is projected to grow 1.3 percent per year until 2050, driven by global population growth and increasing wealth and urbanization. This projected growth places signi¬ficant pressure on the livestock sector to perform in a more sustainable way. Currently, many different methods are used to assess the environmental impacts and performance of livestock products. This causes confusion and makes it dif¬ficult to compare results and set priorities for continuing improvement . The intention of this document is to provide an overview assessment of existing studies and associated methods that have used life cycle assessment for the evaluation of large ruminant supply chains.

    Global production of pork has doubled in the last three decades. Demand for pork projected to rise by 32% by 2030, which will put additional pressure on natural resources. This is of particular concern since the livestock sector already has a major impact on natural resources, using about 35% of total cropland and about 20% of green water for feed production. Hence there is growing interest from the pig and other sectors in measuring and improving environmental performance. There are wide diffe rences in the scale, goals and types of system that produce pigs. This diversity means that there is a great variety of production systems with different production intensities and purposes within and among countries. Conscious of these challenges, LEAP Partnership established in 2015 a technical advisory group to develop comprehensive guidelines on the assessment of the environmental performance of pig supply chains.
