Synopsis (short abstract) In the Solomon Islands, unsustainable logging has had serious impacts on forests. Commercial logging of natural forests has, over the years, changed the vegetation cover of the main islands and led to serious depletion of merchantable timber supplies. This country outlook study examines the implications of this depletion and assesses the likely future scenario for the country. It also discusses issues and constraints surrounding the prevailing customary ownership, as well as the impacts and effe ctiveness of institutional and legislative structures.

The Multicountry Programming Framework for the Pacific Islands (Pacific CPF) 2023–2027 is a strategic plan designed by the FAO to drive agrifood systems transformation and rural development in the Pacific Islands. It builds upon the achievements and lessons learned from the previous 2018–2022 Pacific CPF, emphasizing stakeholder engagement, programmatic approach, and sustainability. Derived from the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for the Pacific Islands (Pacific UNSDCF) 2023–2027, the Pacific CPF aligns with FAO's commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and focuses on key SDGs such as Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Life below Water (SDG 14), and Life on Land (SDG 15). By leveraging partnerships and prioritizing sustainable practices, this framework aims to address the unique challenges faced by the Pacific Islands and contribute to their long-term development.

As part of the SIDS Solutions Forum, 30-31 August 2021, FAO collected innovations and creative digital technologies that respond to local problems and challenges. This flyer presents a hot air dryer for roots and tubers. Local food losses are mainly due to poor infrastructure, power outages, extreme weather conditions, and high transport costs. Traditional processing and preservation are of limited value in extending the shelf life of food. The hot air dryer extends the shelf life of products. This technology supports farmers in fulfilling their consumption needs throughout the year, producing a surplus, and selling the extra to the market. This food processing technology has also helped extend value chains to urban centres and between islands.
