Biodiversity in Action: Transforming Agriculture for a Sustainable Future - FMM/GLO/165/MUL 2024

Biodiversity forms the foundation of all food and agricultural production. It is a crucial resource for strengthening the resilience of production systems, reducing negative environmental impacts, and significantly contributing to food security, nutrition and human well-being. However, despite decades of effort, biodiversity continues to erode at unprecedented rates. Several pressures driving this decline are directly or indirectly linked to agrifood systems, including land use change, overexploitation, pollution and unsustainable consumption patterns. In response, FAO’s Members endorsed the Strategy on Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agricultural Sectors, the 2021-2023 Action Plan for its implementation, and the Framework for Action on Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture. These initiatives aim to scale up sustainable, biodiversity-friendly practices by integrating biodiversity into decision-making processes across policies, projects, economies and society. This subprogramme was implemented in three focus countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Madagascar and Uganda, with a vision of addressing biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation by supporting these countries in key activities identified by FAO Members through the Strategy and Action Plan and implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) while considering synergies with other commitments under the Rio Conventions.
