3. Hydrography.

Figure 3 shows the distribution of temperature, salinity and oxygen in the profiles off Pta Taquien and Cabo Codera. Off Pta Taquien the surface temperatures on the inner- most station arc 3° C lower than those off the shelf and seen together with the isolines for salinity and oxygen the profile gives a picture of clear upwelling of intermediate water being lifted over the shelf and transported to the surface inshore. Off Cabo Cadera there is an increase in temperature shorewards and the isolines for salinity and oxygen indicate no upwelling of intermediate water masses. In the Cariaco Trench profile (Figure 4) there is neither any lift in the isolines shorewards, but the section off Pta Sabana and that nonwestward from Cabo San Roman indicate slight upwelling in the upper 50 m. The section in the Gulf of Venezuela shows no sign of vertical movement in the water masses.
