PREFACE
This document is the adopted report of the First Advisory Committee Meeting of the Aquaculture for Local Community Development Programme. The meeting was hosted by the Government of the Republic of Zambia, and held in Lusaka, 3–5 November 1987.
The Advisory Committee is composed of the participating countries, the donor and the executing agency.
The Programme is inter-regional and its preparatory phase 1986–1988, executed by FAO is funded by Sweden (SIDA). Initially, the Programme focuses on the activities of the SADCC countries.
The main objective of the Programme is to develop, test, and demonstrate strategies, methods, and techniques by which rural populations can improve their standards of living through aquaculture.
During the preparatory phase work concentrated on desk studies, missions and surveys at the regional level and a pilot project in Eastern Province of Zambia. A Technical Consultation on Aquaculture in Rural Development was held in Lusaka, 27–30 October 1987. The activities are ultimately aimed at methodology development and are intended to provide the basis for the formulation of a second phase of the Programme.
