Enhancement of the capabilities of water professionals.

Programme prospectus
Upon the completion of the training, participants will be able to understand various water management practices, understand the Water Resources Consolidation Project (WRCP) and Farmer Organization Turnover (FOT) and understand the importance of forming Water Users Associations (WUAs).

The training course includes WRCP and irrigation system management (video and slide show), soil-water-plant relationship for different crops, water quality and management, on-farm development work, rotational water supply to field, farmers associations, concept of FOT, critical stages of crop growth and management during scarcity, conjunctive use of surface water and groundwater and drip and sprinkler irrigation systems.

Brief description of institution/organization
Tamilnadu Irrigation Management Training Institute (IMTI) is one of 11 institutions set up in the country with financial assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Water Resources Management and Training Project, which was established in April 1984.

The objectives of the institute are to:

- Impart training to in-service personnel serving in the Department of Public Works, Agricultural Engineering and Agriculture.
- Increase agricultural productivity, rural income, development of the human resources and their efficiency in managing system with farmers participation.
- Conduct Action Research in a live irrigation system with farmers participation.
- Motivate farmers to form Water Users Associations (WUA).

IMTI is a society governed by a Governing Council, comprising a chairperson, vice chairperson, member secretary and other members.
