Programme prospectus
Upon completion of training,
participants will be able to explain an irrigation system including on-farm
works and water regulation methods at all levels; explain the objectives and
activities of Water Resources Consolidation Project (WRCP); develop skills in
measuring and recording rainfall and water flow; explain soil types,
agricultural practices, crop seasons, critical stages and water requirements and
the need for timely irrigation; indicate their duties and responsibilities and
enable understanding of farmers' situations, develop skills for conflict
reduction and effective communication.
The training course includes: components of irrigation
systems, need for water management and Water Resources Consolidation Project
(WRCP), soil-water-plant relationship, agricultural practices and the critical
stages of crop growth and water requirement, units of measurements, rainfall
measurements (devices, observations and recording), water flow measurements
(devices, structures, observations and recording), irrigation system
maintenance, communication skills, farmer organizations, duties and
responsibilities of field staff and on-farm development works. The training
programme also includes a field visit to an irrigation command area.

Brief description of

Tamilnadu Irrigation Management Training
Institute (IMTI) is one of 11 institutions set up in the country with financial
assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
under the Water Resources Management and Training Project, which was established
in April 1984.
The objectives of the Institute are to:
- Train in-service personnel in the Department of
Public Works, Agricultural Engineering and Agriculture.
- Increase
agricultural productivity, rural income, develop human resources and efficiency
in managing systems with farmers' participation.
- Conduct Action Research in
a live irrigation system with farmers' participation.
- Motivate farmers to
form Water Users Associations (WUA).
IMTI is a society governed by a Governing Council comprising a
chairperson, vice chairperson, member secretary and other members. |
