Programme prospectus
The International Irrigation Center develops technical training courses at the request of different countries in order to reach a larger number of professionals. Several countries have organized courses in conjunction with the International Irrigation Center under the sponsorship of different donor agencies. This has proven to be a very efficient technology transfer process in these countries.

During 1984, the International Irrigation Center cooperated with the Water and Land Management Institute at Aurangabad, India, in presenting a course on Irrigation Scheduling. In the same year, the IIC also cooperated with several agencies in Bolivia (the US Agency for International Development, the Development Corporation of Tarija, the Programme for Land Rehabilitation in Tarija and Juan Misael Saracho University) in presenting a course at Tarija on the Design and Operation of Small Irrigation Systems. In 1985, two courses were presented in Bangladesh on Irrigation Water Production Functions and Groundwater Investigations in cooperation with the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council. In addition, another course was conducted in Bolivia: On-Farm Water Management.

Since these inaugural efforts, additional courses have been conducted in many countries around the world: Bolivia, Brazil, Egypt, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Most of the courses are about one month in duration; however, the time varies according to the particular requirements of the host country.

Brief description of institution/organization
The International Irrigation Center (IIC) was established in 1980 as part of the Department of Biological and Irrigation Engineering at Utah State University. The Center was created as a response to an increasing need to provide training and research to enhance the capabilities of professionals and scientists outside the USA for improving irrigated agriculture in their countries.

The general objectives of the IIC are to:

- Provide a unique training experience in agricultural water management and utilization geared to the responsibilities and functions of personnel managing water for societal development; Promote applied research with the goal of contributing to the knowledge base and creating research specialists. Research that is basic to the needs and constraints of developing societies is to be emphasized.
- Maintain a technical resource entity specializing in the processes of utilizing water for agricultural production and societal development.
- Contribute to international cooperation and understanding through professional activities of the technical staff, effective research and special studies, enhanced capability of the trainees and the professional reputation of former students.
