Programme prospectus
This module introduces
irrigation theory, design, operation and evaluation. The course covers the
following:
- Irrigation as an input to agriculture and
development: Irrigation systems and methods of water application. Large-scale
and small-scale irrigation schemes. Problems and criticisms of existing schemes.
Alternatives to irrigation.
- Planning irrigation water requirements: crop
water requirements, field and farm water losses, distribution and administrative
losses, irrigation efficiency, adequacy and effectiveness.
- Canal systems:
layout of canals, drains and the irrigation unit, canal capacity and command
requirements, channel design, seepage and canal linings; water level and
discharge control, upstream and downstream control, continuous flow, by
rotation, on-demand, night storage, choice of structures.
- Surface
irrigation: basin, border and furrow methods; rice irrigation; land grading;
system design and operation, evaluation.
- Sprinkler irrigation: static
sprinkler systems, portable sprinkler systems; mechanized sprinkler systems;
system design and operation, evaluation.
- Trickle irrigation: systems,
design and operation, evaluation.

Institute of Water and Environment is internationally renowned for its
multidisciplinary approach to sustaining the world's environment and fresh water
resources. It is committed to providing practical and cost-effective management
solutions to the ever-increasing problems associated with human activities. The
institute works closely with the EU, DFID, Environment Agency, MAFF, English
Nature, Severn Trent Water, Unilever, BP, CDC, Rhône Poulenc, RSPB, Water
Aid, Oxfam and many other organizations worldwide. Its unique team of
economists, engineers, ecologists, agronomists, soil scientists, land use
planners, water quality specialists, hydrologists and management consultants
work together to produce integrated and feasible solutions to meet our clients'
needs. The institute offers three Masters courses and undertakes research and
consultancies in a wide range of topic areas relating to the protection,
enhancement and sustainable use of natural resources. |
