Programme prospectus This short course is no longer
running on a regular basis but it can be rescheduled upon request of a client.
The course includes the following subjects and activities: planning and design
for irrigation project rehabilitation - review of the current social, economic,
organizational and technical aspects of irrigation project operation;
identification of needed system improvement and modernization; farmer
participation in rehabilitation planning and feasibility study; project
formulation and implementation; review and modification of planning and design
criteria; water resources availability and requirements analysis; planning for
rehabilitation works; water management and project operation - strategic
planning for system operation; goals and objectives setting; selecting key
performance indicators; water allocation and irrigation scheduling; water use
and irrigation efficiency; staff and farmer training; farmer participation in
project management; planning, budgeting and executing maintenance programme;
project monitoring and evaluation - key performance indicators; performance
measurement methods; evaluation of results; case studies, project work and field
visits.
On completion of the course, the participants should be able
to make critical analysis of the need for improvement/rehabilitation and
modernization of deteriorated irrigation projects based on current farming
practices, needs of farmers, availability of water resources, as well as new
technology and related environment. New management strategy will be developed,
based on past experiences and input from farmers, to improve project performance
and sustainability.

Brief description of institution/organization The
Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is an autonomous, international
post-graduate institute based in Bangkok, Thailand. Established in 1959, AIT
