Programme prospectus
The objective of the course is to prepare graduate agronomists, agricultural and civil (water resources) engineers for professional careers in land and water management with a particular emphasis on irrigated agriculture. Within this framework, further goals are to offer these subjects, which are not at all and/or insufficiently treated during graduate studies, to instil in students an awareness of the social and environmental implications of technology and management practice and to motivate them to make worthwhile contributions to the profession and to society.

The course programme was reorganized in 1998/99 to promote the integrated management of land and water resources while applying modern technologies and computer facilities. The course is financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and CIHEAM. Each year approximately 25 candidates are enrolled in the course from nine to twelve Mediterranean countries and other regions of the world. Interest in the course is high. The number of applicants is twice the number of places. Therefore the number of participants are limited for reasons of logistics and finances.

Brief description of institution/organization
The Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (IAMB) is one of the four Institutes that make up the Centre International de Hautes Etudes Agronomiques Méditerranéennes (CIHEAM), founded in 1962 as an inter-governmental organization under the auspices of the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development).

The CIHEAM mandate is to be an instrument of cooperation between the countries of the Mediterranean in the areas of postgraduate agricultural education and the promotion of agricultural research through cooperative networks.

Currently, CIHEAM comprises 13 member countries: Albania, Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey.

Over four decades of activity, CIHEAM has become recognized for excellence in the field of education and research in agriculture, water-resource management, agri-food industry and the environment, working in partnership with the specialist national institutions as well as in cooperation with the international organizations active in the region (e.g. ICARDA, FAO, OADA, etc.).
