Upon the completion of
training, participants will be able to explain the necessity of adopting
water-saving modern irrigation methods, explain the principles of sprinkler and
drip irrigation systems, develop skills in layout and design of sprinkler and
drip irrigation systems and develop skills in the evaluation of sprinkler and
drip irrigation systems.
The curriculom of the training course includes: concepts of
irrigation water management, soil-water-plant relationship, crop water
requirement, methods of irrigation, infiltration, principles of drip irrigation,
drip irrigation system (layout and design), evaluation of drip irrigation system
(theory and practice), sprinkler irrigation systems (layout and design),
evaluation of sprinkler irrigation system (theory and practice), economics of
modern irrigation methods and popularization of drip and sprinkler irrigation.
The training programme also includes a field visit to irrigation schemes with
modern methods.

Brief description of
institution/organization
Tamilnadu Irrigation Management Training
Institute (IMTI) is one of 11 institutions set up in the country with financial
assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
under the Water Resources Management and Training Project, which was established
in April 1984.
The objectives of the institute are to:
- Impart training to the in-service personnel
serving in the Department of Public Works, Agricultural Engineering and
Agriculture.
- Increase agricultural productivity, rural income, development
of human resources and their efficiency in managing system with farmers
participation.
- Conduct Action Research in a live irrigation system with
farmers participation.
- Motivate the farmers to form Water Users
Associations (WUA).
IMTI is a society governed by a Governing Council, comprising
chairperson, vice chairperson, member secretary and other members. |
