Programme prospectus
The course curriculum includes: concept, importance, needs, past and present status of Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) in India; PIM model of Maharashtra (concept, needs, importance and its present status); PIM in other states (Rajasthan, Gujarat, A.P., Tamil Nadu, Karanataka, Orissa and Goa); benefits, bylaws and agreement for WUAs; PIM in Mexico, USA, Philippines and Sri Lanka; monitoring and evaluation of WUA; cropping patterns; and success stories. Field visit to WUA/discussion and brainstorming are also included.

The course is useful in the updating of knowledge about WUAs in different states, which will enhance the PIM movement in different states and in India in general.

Brief description of institution/organization
Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI, Aurangabad) is a premier in-service training institute in irrigation and water management.

The institute was established as an autonomous registered society and a first institute in India by Irrigation Department, Government of Maharashtra with the financial support of the World Bank and USAID. The institute provides in-service training in irrigation water management for the officers of Irrigation and Agriculture Department, Government of Maharashtra and to the farmers of the state. The institute also conducts National and International Programmes in irrigation water management through sponsorship by different donor agencies. The other activities of the institute include the Action Research Programme and Consultancy Services in the field of irrigation water management to the different stakeholders.
