Programme prospectus
During the last 15 years, worldwide intensive efforts in irrigation system diagnostics have concluded that: in order to alleviate the crisis in the irrigated agriculture sector in many countries, the efficiency of water use needs to be improved. By solving the problems of irrigated agriculture, a large part of the solution in rural societies in developing countries could be achieved.

The On-Farm Water Management Course, is one of the first courses implemented by the International Irrigation Center for irrigated agriculture the world over. In addition to the traditional technological tools for improved irrigation management operation at the farm level, the course incorporates new additions that address the issues relevant to long-term diagnostics. Irrigation extension, one of the weakest elements in the chain of technology transfer to the farmers, is emphasized; and new assessment and adaptive models are discussed. The invaluable participation of women in rural societies and in particular the role they play in rural irrigated agriculture societies, will be analysed and evaluated.

The course is designed for professionals from a wide range of disciplines, planners through to practitioners, including agricultural and civil engineers, agriculturists, social scientists, economists, administrative personnel and others assisting farmers and farmer groups to participate actively in managing the irrigation water delivered, applied to the farm and drained from the land. Field work will involve hands-on-experience with various phases of irrigation.

Target group
Designed for professional staff from a wide range of disciplines from planners to practitioners.

Brief description of institution/organization
The International Irrigation Center (IIC) was established in 1980 as part of the Department of Biological and Irrigation Engineering at Utah State University. The Center was created in response to an increasing need for providing training and research to enhance the capabilities of professionals and scientists outside the USA for improving irrigated agriculture in their countries.

The general objectives of the IIC are to:

- Provide a unique training experience in agricultural water management and utilization geared to the responsibilities and functions of personnel managing water for societal development.
- Promote applied research with the goal of contributing to the knowledge base and creating research specialists. Research that is basic to the needs and constraints of developing societies is emphasized.
- Maintain a technical resource entity specializing in the processes of utilizing water for agricultural production and societal development.
- Contribute to international cooperation and understanding through professional activities of the technical staff, effective research and special studies, enhanced capability of the trainees and the professional reputation of former students.
