Programme prospectus The objectives of this course
is to cover all essential components of the operation and maintenance aspects of
irrigation project so that these projects can be maintained at the desired
level. The trainees will have fair knowledge of various operational strategies
under available water and physical constraints and develop the skills to prepare
an operation plan for a given irrigation project.
The course includes: irrigation system operation, preparation
of irrigation system operation plan, improving irrigation system maintenance
practices, soil-water-plant relationship, irrigation scheduling in relation to
soil characteristics and crop water requirement, water budget, operation of
canal based on crop water requirement, maintenance of canals, specific problems
such as aquatic weeding, Warabandi method of irrigation water distribution below
outlets and farmer organizations for irrigation management.
Target group In-service personnel of the State
Irrigation and Agriculture Department engaged in irrigated agriculture
activities.

Brief description of
institution/organization Tamilnadu Irrigation Management Training
Institute (IMTI) is one of 11 institutions set up in the country with financial
assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
under the Water Resources Management and Training Project, which was established
in April 1984.
The objectives of the Institute are to:
- Impart training to the in-service personnel
serving in the Department of Public Works, Agricultural Engineering and
Agriculture. - Increase agricultural productivity, rural incomes, development
of human resources and their efficiency in managing systems with farmers
participation. - Conduct Action Research in a live irrigation system with
farmers' participation. - Motivate the farmers to form Water Users
Associations (WUA).
IMTI is a society governed by a Governing Council comprising a
chairperson, vice chairperson, member secretary and other members. |
