Programme prospectus
Upon completion of training,
participants will be able to prepare an operation plan for an irrigation system
taking into consideration all operating variables related to water, land, crop
and socio-economic aspects; suggest various strategies to modify the operation
plan during periods of water scarcity, excess rainfall and floods; and to
identify maintenance problems and their causes and suggest suitable remedial
measures.
The course includes: hydro meteorological analysis, types of
irrigation systems and functions, flow measurements, irrigation system
operation, crop water requirement, assessment of irrigation demand, matching
demand and supply, evaluation of rule curves, floods and flood routing, canal
operation and water distribution, identification of maintenance problems in
irrigation system, principles of operation plan, preparation of an operation
plan, implementation of operation plans responding to rainfall, irrigation water
scarcity, irrigation system efficiency and estimation of water losses; use of
the computer and reservoir operation and sedimentation and the role of farmers
in operation and maintenance. The training programme includes visits to field,
soil laboratory and meteorological station.

Brief description of

Tamilnadu Irrigation Management Training
Institute (IMTI) is one of 11 institutions set up in the country with
financial assistance from the United States Agency for International Development
(USAID) under the Water Resources Management and Training Project, which was
established in April 1984.
The objectives of the institute are to:
- Impart training to in-service personnel serving
in the Department of Public Works, Agricultural Engineering and
Agriculture.
- Increase agricultural productivity, rural income, development
of the human resources and their efficiency in managing system with farmers
participation.
- Conduct Action Research in a live irrigation system with
farmers participation.
- Motivate farmers to form Water Users Associations
(WUA).
IMTI is a society governed by a Governing Council, comprising
a chairperson, vice chairperson, member secretary and other members. |
