Programme prospectus
Principles and Practices of Farm Management teaches participants to improve farm management, operations and rice crops in a sustainable manner. As production is nearly sufficient, the farmers who focus on quality receive the greatest benefit from research and development. Course participants gain information and use up-to-date farm equipment and farm management practices.

The objective of the course is to produce a complete farm plan that includes human, financial and physical resources of the farm. Most training activities are hands-on field and laboratory exercises, special projects and field tours at enterprises such as rice mills. Participants use modern farm equipment and techniques to produce and assess a rice crop. Other activities are mini-lectures, individual and group discussion sessions, problem-solving exercises and the use of self-learning materials.

Target group

Brief description of institution/organization
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is an autonomous, non-profit agricultural research and training organization with offices in more than ten nations. The institute's main goal is to find sustainable ways to improve the well-being of present and future generations of poor rice farmers and consumers while at the same time protecting the environment.

Most of IRRI's research is done in cooperation with national agricultural research and development institutions, farming communities and other organizations of the world's rice-producing nations. IRRI's founders realized that research without education and training would have little or no impact on rice farmers and consumers. This guiding principle has continued to drive IRRI's training mission. Integrated training and extension efforts provide a link between science and practice.
