For example, the use of modern varieties and improved cultural practices have increased rice yields throughout tropical Asia. This two-week rice production course is an orientation to rice production, from seed preparation to post harvest. It is a condensed version of IRRI's rice production research course designed primarily for junior researchers and extension and development workers to update them on the new techniques of wetland rice culture. It covers the basic concepts associated with the rice plant and improved cultural practices with emphasis on basic skills development. The course will enable participants to appreciate the importance of rice and the environments where rice is being grown; understand how rice varieties are developed and how seed is produced; recognize and apply the important techniques of rice culture; detect, identify and solve common field problems of rice production; and perform field operations in rice culture. www Brief description of institution/organization Most of IRRI's research is done in cooperation with national agricultural research and development institutions, farming communities and other organizations of the world's rice-producing nations. IRRI's founders realized that research without education and training would have little or no impact on rice farmers and consumers. This guiding principle has continued to drive IRRI's training mission. Integrated training and extension efforts provide a link between science and practice. |
