Programme prospectus The purpose of this training
programme is to enrich participants' knowledge regarding open channel
hydraulics, control structures, water distribution process and various methods
of flow measurements in irrigation systems.
The training course includes: overview of the Water Resources
Consolidation Project (WRCP), fundamentals of open channel flow, gated and
ungated flow control structures, concepts of structured irrigation network,
control structures and off-take structures, design of control and off-take
structures using computers, water measuring devices (weirs, notches and
orifices), estimation of water losses in channels, measurement of flow in
rivers, flow measuring devices (Parshall flume and Cutthroat flume, calibration
of structure by current meter, reservoir operation canal operation, rotational
water supply.

Brief description of
institution/organization Tamilnadu Irrigation Management Training
Institute (IMTI) is one of 11 institutions set up in the country with financial
assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
under the Water Resources Management and Training Project, which was established
in April 1984.
The objectives of the Institute are to:
- Impart training to the in-service personnel
serving in the Department of Public Works, Agricultural Engineering and
Agriculture. - Increase agricultural productivity, rural income, development
of the human resources and their efficiency in managing system with farmers
participation. - Conduct action research in a live irrigation system with
farmers participation. - Motivate farmers to form Water Users Associations
(WUAs).
IMTI is a society governed by a Governing Council comprising a
chairperson, vice chairperson, member secretary and other members. |
