Programme prospectus
Water is fundamental to life but can too easily be subject to overexploitation and contamination. Its proper management is essential, whether it is to be used in agriculture, community development or to sustain natural habitats. Professional water managers need to know how to develop integrated solutions, requiring social, institutional, political, legal and financial, as well as scientific, technical and environmental awareness and understanding.

The same core issues face all water managers, namely: the assessment of water resource availability; user needs and allocation; identification and management of water quality requirements for different uses; selection of technologies for abstracting, distributing, storing and controlling water and the social, financial, economic, institutional, legal and political environment.

Rather than being compartmentalized, these themes are integrated so that awareness of issues such as conflict between stakeholders and imbalances between supply and demand are raised. The lectures will introduce these common themes drawing on examples from developed and developing countries. Students will then be required to undertake individual research in order to prepare for a debate on each topic and to present a position paper.
