This is the report of the Technical Consultation on the Reduction of Wastage in Fisheries as approved by participating at the meeting. The meeting was hosted, organized and funded by the Fisheries Agency of the Government of Japan in collaboration with FAO and took place in Tokyo, Japan, from 28 October to 1 November 1996. The papers prepared for the expert consultation and presented at the meeting will be issued as a supplement to this report. |
FAO. The report of the Technical Consultation on Reduction of Wastage in Fisheries held in Tokyo, Japan (28 October - 1 November 1996) summarizes the discussions of the meeting and the recommendations formulated. These include discussions on the definitions used and the obligations and recommendations under international agreements such as the United Nations Agreement for the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks and the FAO Stocks and the FAO Code of conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The meeting discussed the progress made in reducing wastage through selective fishing and fishing gear, fuller utilization of catches and management of fisheries. The collection of data on and the refinement of estimates of fish discards was also discussed at lenght. |
