Annex 25 Creel survey in Mberengwa and Insiza Districts

Objectives

Method

The creel survey is carried out during three consecutive days from which one is a holiday or a weekend day.

At 9H00, 12H00, 15H00 and 18H00 the number of fishers around the dam is counted, eventually split up in maximum 6 different parts. A sketch is made of the dam with the different parts. Criterion for subdivision in parts is the fact that it should be able to count all fishers in each part from one point.

In between the counting of all fishers, a number of fishers (randomly women, men and children) is interviewed to determine the time that they fished and the quantity of fish that they caught. A chart with the different fish species is available for easy identification of the fish.

Identity of the fishers is kept secret with the interviewer. These data are not transmitted to ALCOM or any other organization.

Reporting

There are three different creel survey forms:

  1. Form 1 is used to note the number of fishers at a certain time in every part of the dam
  2. Form 2 is used to note the individual fisher's data on fishing time and catch + eventually a number of additional data on fishing economics
  3. The identity data are noted down in a personal and confidential booklet.

The first two forms will be handed over at every visit of the ALCOM team to the reservoir (monthly). At the same time results from previous creel surveys will be discussed. The confidential data stay in possession of the community member.

Time schedule

Creel survey will take place every month at various moments: beginning, middle or end of the month but every time during 3 consecutive days.

Notes:
Sum of number is the number of fishers counted on a 3 hour interval
Fish-hours per day is number of fishers on 3 hour interval times 3 divided by number of creel survey days
CPUE for hook and line fishing was determined for all dams together by the creel survey (determined at 190 g/hour)
Daily catch = Fish-hours/day times CPUE in kg/hour
IMPORTANT NOTE: DATA ARE FOR 1 MONTH ONLY WITH GENERAL CPUE AND ONLY HOOK AND LINE
