Note from the reviser
The revision and publications of this document could only be done a long time after the closure of the project. This has led to some difficulties in finalising the documents and implementing corrections, because authors and contributors as well as some of the original material or files were no longer available.
Therefore contributions from participants and session papers annexed to most of the documents were left in their original form. No language corrections were introduced, the content was not modified and left under their respective author's responsibility.
Considering the above, we hope that the reader will understand that a standard of publication could not be maintained on a level as high as we would have liked it to be.
Abstract
The objective of the Seminar on Documentation and Information System, organised by MEDRAP II on December 11–13, 1991, was to contribute to the establishment of a permanent and self-sustaining information system for aquaculture in the region.
The participants expressed their views and comments on needs and capabilities for the successful implementation of the proposed system, referred to as System of Information for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean "SIPAM".
The primary objective of SIPAM is to provide the countries adhering to the project, with an instrument and a methodology for rapid and targeted access to data and information of different types and from different sources.
It is a system that will produce useful and usable information through organised methods of selecting, storing, retrieving and reporting on non-reserved national data of regional interest which the countries are able to put at the disposal of the project, and information coming from regional and international sources.
The seminar considered the different phases of implementation and decided that the first phase should be the design and implementation of the regional information module, the second phase the consolidation phase including the remaining countries both as recipients and contributors, and the last phase should be the expansion on a self-sustained basis.
The participants recommended the proposed step by step approach by initiating immediately the building-up the system with some countries having already an ongoing data system and relevant activities. Egypt, Turkey, Cyprus, Portugal and Tunisia constituted the participating group in phase 1. All countries concerned should be equipped with a basis hardware, software and having the appropriate skills.
